When searchers of the North Carolina bat and natural creatures they think of North Carolina and there mind immediately snaps to the North Carolina Bat Caves. North Carolina bat control needs to not worry about the Bat Cave as it is one of the natural wonders of our country. The North Carolina Bat cave has a natural air conditioning method that keeps the air cool in the cave because of the cool moist draft that pours out of the vents on the side of the cave. In the main part of the cave it is 300 feet long and 85 feet high. It is known to be the largest granite fissure cave known to man in North America. The North Carolina Bat Cave is currently owned by the Nature Conservancy and Margaret Flinsch. The property has been in her family since the 1920’s. In 1981 she made the gesture to the Nature Conservancy. The North Carolina Bat Cave is not open to the public because of the importance it holds to nature in the area. Scientists are allowed to enter the cave in the summer months but the preserve is shut down to even them during October to mid-April to allow the native bats to use the cave for hibernation. If one were to disturb these bats during that time it could lead to 100’s to 1,000’s of bats to die if their hibernation was disturbed. There have been three new un-described invertebrates found in the Bat Cave including a spider, a millipede and an amphipod. These creatures have become adapt to living in the cave with no sunlight and very limited amount of food. This has given scientists plenty of new information to study. The Bat Cave is hidden in the Mountains of Henderson and Rutherford Counties of North Carolina. Each Spring and then again in August the Nature Conservancy makes tours that are available for people in the scientific community. This is to protect the bats and other creatures inside Bat Cave. There are no public tours. Scientists hope by studying the bats in their natural habitat they will be able to gain new insight. The North Carolina bat problem is hoped to be solved by the new information that can be drawn from the cave. Bats are declining in population around the country as in North Carolina making many people worry about the future of the North Carolina bat control species. These North Carolina bat control scientist’s know that the information found in Bat Cave might help them reverse the trend. Even with Bat Cave this will not end the need for a North Carolina bat control specialist for a never ending North Carolina bat problem.
